Are both dates included?

Yes. A range from Monday to Friday counts as five working days, not four. That is what people usually mean, though some contracts count differently — check the wording if a deadline turns on it.

How many bank holidays are there?

England and Wales have eight permanent bank holidays, Scotland has nine, and Northern Ireland has ten. Extra one-off holidays are occasionally declared for national events.

Do I get bank holidays off?

There is no automatic right to paid leave on a bank holiday in the UK. Your employer may require you to work one, and may count them towards your 5.6 weeks of statutory holiday.

What if a bank holiday falls at a weekend?

A substitute weekday is designated instead, and that substitute day is the bank holiday. This calculator uses the substitute dates, which is what the GOV.UK feed publishes.

Where do the dates come from?

The official GOV.UK bank holiday feed, refreshed weekly. If the feed cannot be reached the calculator falls back to computed dates and says so on the result.
