For journalists and researchers

Every figure on this site carries the date it was checked and a link to its source. The statutory rates page has them all in one table.

Three things reporting on this usually gets wrong

Northern Ireland has different redundancy limits. The weekly cap and the maximum payment are set separately and are higher than in Great Britain. Minimum wage, sick pay and family pay are UK-wide; redundancy is not.

Scotland has six income tax bands, not three. The higher rate starts at a different point, and two bands have no equivalent elsewhere. A single UK take-home figure does not describe Scotland.

Above £100,000 the effective rate is about 60%, not 40%. The personal allowance is withdrawn by £1 for every £2 earned, so a rise crossing that point is worth far less than it looks.

On a deadline

Ask and you will get a figure, its source, and a worked example. Use the contact form, choose “press or research enquiry”, and say it is urgent in the first line.

Where a figure comes from GOV.UK, Acas or a statutory instrument, please cite that rather than this site. It is the citation an editor wants.
